I was on a call with long-time CLASS trainer, @Melissa Wilhelm, yesterday. We were talking about all those teachers out there who are providing virtual instruction and supporting children at home. She posed an excellent question:

What at-home materials could you use in order to facilitate Instructional Support interactions? Using those materials, what questions might you ask to promote higher-order thinking, encourage language use, or scaffold learning?

We thought: who better to ask than our knowledgeable CLASS Community? Let's get a brainstorm going: What are some different ways to integrate Instructional Support interactions with children in virtual settings, using the at-home materials that children may have access to?

    Hi Emily,
Anytime we can connect materials with the interest of the child, it provides stronger avenues for learning :) With this in mind, what is the child's interests? What materials do you have readily available which could be used to accomplish the learning goals we have set for young children?

    Warmly,
    JoNeen

Healthy At Home (ReadyRosie) videos are very good examples of games and activities that families can do at home, or teachers can lead via Zoom etc.

I am also a huge fan of Erikson Institute's Early Math Collaborative, and they have excellent math activities that flow naturally from non-academic settings.

March 17, 2021 A good sense of the number ten is critical for building young children's reasoning strategies. Here we see kindergarteners making the number ten on a rekenrek, a tool with red and white beads in groups of 5s with 10 beads on each row.

P.S.  Also agree that almost anything the child is interested in can be valuable learning material.  "WWREPD?"  (What would a Reggio Emilia preschool do?) LOL.  I did ask my sole remote student last winter to tell me something she's been thinking about lately, and she said pancakes.  Next couple of Zooms had at least 2 pancake connections each time. Although no actual pancakes...
