  • 1.  Coaching goals

It's nearly the end of the year, which means many of us are reflecting on what has gone well and what next year will look like. After our InterAct Summit, we asked attendees what goals they came away with. We also asked if they were interested in us following up in the CLC to see how their goals were coming along.

Many shared a goal around ensuring teachers receive effective, frequent CLASS-based feedback and coaching. We heard goals like, "Give feedback to teachers more often", "Bring CLASS into other training", "Focus on only one dimension at a time" and "Offer feedback, not advice. Try to make my feedback more objective and specific."

Who else has set a goal around CLASS-based feedback and coaching? Did you meet your goals for this year? What are your goals moving forward?

Those of you who set a coaching goal after InterAct, how are those goals coming along? What steps have you put into place? @Gwen Macias, @Francine Prince, @Jennifer Strickland, @Gloria Howard, @Kate O'sullivan, @Cynthia Besharatpour, @Gillian Nash, @Donna Galvan, @Tory Hagains

A Coaching Guide to Asking Reflective Questions: Part 1
Take a minute to think of your coaching toolbox. What are some of your go-to questions? Go ahead and list a few. Now reflect on those questions. What are the types of questions you use? Why do you use those questions? How do you know when to use one question versus another?

After participating in the CLC book club reading, I made a goal to use language that highlights the teacher's strengths ("I noticed... That is good for children because...") and embed that into CLASS-based feedback. I have had a few opportunities to try it and I am happy with the outcome.

For next year, I would like to incorporate monthly coaching meetings with my colleagues. It would be beneficial to our practice and our work with teachers for us to have a designated time to discuss what we are noticing, what is working well and areas for improvement. In addition, I would like to hand write notes to teachers and be more intentional about individualizing my approach in the early stages of relationship-building. I have been really inspired by the discussion posts and readings I've done so there's so MUCH I want to try. However, as I encourage my teachers, I will choose two achievable goals, master them and move on the next step.

@Gizelle McIntyre those are impressive, specific, intentional goals. I'm sure your teachers will really appreciate the hand-written notes. I had a coach that left a sticky note in my mailbox with one positive thing after each observation and it was such a nice, small touch. I love that you're already seeing positive results. I'm looking forward to hearing how things continue to improve!

Excellent suggestion, "two heads (or more) is always better than one". Looking forward to continue my self PD through our discussions.

I've also been observing one of my students who have been active/practicing reading-readiness skills. He is above   PreK/Kindergarten level, I will focus on moving to other words, fluent and continue with Math  skills to characterize his ability for first grade readiness along with summer experiences.
