    Hello everyone, 

    I am an assistant in a 2yr old class. We have a few students who show no interest in using the potty. One I particular who uses the potty at home then shows no interest while in school. And one who will be transitioning to the 3yr old class soon and has no concept of potty use what-do-ever. His parents are looking to us to potty training him. What do we do for the ones who only show interest at all and to encourage the ones who do it at home to do it at school?

    Hello,My name is Eugenia Banks and in my experience with the children who show interest  and the children you are trying to get on that level we always have some type of reward like stickers,skittles or a treasure box.It helps that the children see their peers receive a treat for going to the potty and if they don't  go they of course can't receive a treat.

    Hello,
    I would ask the parents what are they doing at home that is encouraging the child to go potty. I would try to mirror the same strategies in the classroom (only if appropriate) that seem to be working at home.

    Children much have a reasonable amount of language skills before potty training. Also, keep in mind they will give you clues such as hide somewhere for a BM, and bounce around when they need to go potty... best way to encourage potty training is to encourage child to go into bathroom every 30 minutes in the beginning, followed by a praise, then reassure, and encourage again. Yes, it is a bit more work in the beginning however a lot less once the child masters the skill.

    You need the parents to assist you in potty training. School and home must be the same for potty training to be effective. I would talk to the parents and let them know that it is a team effort, or it will be futile. You can do a sticker reward chart to encourage interest in using the potty. The child must have some way to communicate either verbally or through sign language that they need to use the restroom. Communication is essential for potty training too. I hope that helps.

    Hello everyone, 

    I worked with two year old's  and did potty training for a few years. Most, of the children showed no interest do to the fact that they where only potty training at school. When home they just used a pull up. I began to tell parents what we where doing in class as far as potting and how often I was taking the children and some got on board. My children who wasn't to interest I let them just come in and flush the potty and wash there hands then I started to sit them on the potty and we would potty dance. I also started a treasure box for the children who where potting and the other children wanted a Prize so they to wanted to go potty.

    Thank you for your suggestions. We still have one student who still is not showing interest. Her parents stay that she uses it at home but the total disconnect between what they say she does at home vs. her total lack of interest and understanding still of potty culture is confusing. I'll try having her just flush and wash her hands to see if she changes her energy about it. It's almost as if the bathroom in general is a foreign place to her. Outside of the changing table.
