Encouraging Outdoor Play

In Virginia the weather is braking and we are spending a lot more outdoor time with our 2 year old class. We have a large open soft grassy area for us the kids to play in. Does anyone have suggestions to activities and outdoor toys that would keep them engaged and active?

    Good morning
I have a couple of suggestions for outdoor play.

    1. Tightly roll up a piece of paper, longer the better, scrap paper is perfect. Attach a ribbon on the end of the rolled up paper, as if they now have a wand. Ribbon dancing.
    2. Blowing bubbles
    3. Grassy area perfect for a foot race
Hope one of these is helpful.

    Hi,
Bring the duplo(lego)/blocks outside together with animals and build a farm/zoo on a blanket. Maybe read books about it first so the children have som ideas.
    Paint on large sheets.

I guess the real question is what can't you do?!?! When you are outside you are not limited by less messy activities.
I recommend sensory play - get some sensory bins and go crazy. Cornstarch and water, dirt and bugs, water and buckets....the list can go on and on.

    Happy exploring!

    Hi Shanna,

My suggestions would be to hang large paper, large coffee filters or some sort of absorbent paper product on something (fencing or the like) and offer the children large trigger spray bottles with colored water.  As they spray, it will work those necessary muscles to build their fine motor over time.  It will also create an array of beautiful creations made just by each one without any need to be perfect.  The creations can be laminated, or not and then used for further discussion and recall.  Maybe a place mat for under lunch at school or at home.  A nice connection with home.

If you're really brave, let these two year olds help you mix up some mud (yes, on purpose) and roll up sleeves and pant legs.  Allow the children to walk through in bare feet and then walk onto a mural to support the reading and singing of The Ants Go Marching One by One!  Lots of fun, but lots of patience!  They love it and so will you when you display this (after it's dried, of course) in the foyer of your building!

Two year olds are so great!  Trying to be oh so independent and they love to explore...just give them the opportunities.  You don't need to entertain them, they'll captivate you with what they're able to do (with your guidance)!

Use all types of paintbrushes (tempera, sponge, wall, etc.) with small buckets of water for the children to paint everything/anything.  They can also use small spray bottles filled with water.  They can paint or spray over and over again as it dries quickly.  Kids also love it when I would "paint" around their bodies as they lay on the sidewalk.

    Building Resilience and Learning Outdoors

    Five Towns Early Learning Center

We are so fortunate that over 20 years ago, some very wise Board members proposed a garden playground project for our backyard. I believe that it took over 10 years for the play garden to come to fruition – with planning, raising funds and finally building the Gertrude Rieur Garden Playground. How wise – how much foresight our Board had when they dreamed of a play garden for the children.

When in 2009, we opened our Certified Nature Explore Classroom, we never expected that we would live through a pandemic. We never expected all the confusion and stress that it would bring to our community, the children and the world. To serve our community we expanded our program for 18 months to include 15 school-aged children. The children who attended either had siblings in the younger classes or had attended our program previously. The school-aged group was doing remote learning – each child with their device, in their individual program.

The schedule was a bit confusing and crazy, but at 1:00pm we shut down the devices and took the school-aged children outside. You should have seen what happened in our backyard. The children built homes for the bugs and they built structures with branches to play in. They created games and played scavenger hunt. They took everything outside. They read books and played chess on the gazebo. They played tag and hopscotch. They became experts with the hula hoops. We had to buy multiple jump ropes as they all learned to jump rope. They even were competent at double dutch and had three children jumping together.

It was a joy to get these children away from their devices and watch the children (ages 5-10) play in the Nature Explore Classroom each day. Because of our Nature Explore Classroom, we have been able to give our children, trees and flowers and sky – an experience in nature. During the entire 18 months, we have been able to provide experiences in the outdoors that support, not only physical health, but mental and spiritual health as well.
