  • 1.  Repetition AND/OR Extension

I recently conducted a CLASS Training and during our coding discussion on the Language Modeling under Repetition and extension, it was pointed out that the face page states "Repetition and extension" whereas on the descriptive pages (as well as face page range descriptors) say "repeats or extends...".  I explained that the bolded face page words/phrases are titles for indicators.

Participants said they evaluated observed interactions based on whether teacher did BOTH repeating and extending/elaborating words and statements.  They felt confused by the differences.

Has this come up for anyone else?

@Danee Jones-Mitchell Great question. Can you clarify the age level of the training? This will help us dig in to our manuals to support you in puzzling through this!

Yup! The age level matters :) I left a longer response in the Coaches and Observers group, where this conversation is cross posted, but I'll leave the Cliff's Notes here: If you're observing Toddler, you're looking for repetition *and* extension for high range, but if you're observing Pre-K, you can get to high range with just one or the other (usually repetition).

I'm sorry--age level certainly makes a difference!  This came up during a PreK training.  To clarify--its the word "AND" on the face page the word "OR" in the descriptors that threw participants a curve.  I was able to explain that its an "either/or" situation when observing repetition and extension and the use of the word "AND" on the face page has to do with it being a title of the indicator but not to be taken literally implying that BOTH have to be seen.  Even though language in the descriptor pages make the "OR" clear, they felt it was misleading.  I took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of reading the descriptors pages.

'Just wondered if anyone else had had participants get "stuck" on this.
