When I receive my results of my certification tests , I try to figure out where I went wrong. If I put a 3 and my summary shows that I scored too high in that dimension ( only error) does that mean that I should have scored a !. My thinking is that if the correct answer was a 2 it would have been marked correct. Is that correct?

I know that you are allowed to be off by 1 point and have it still count as ok.  What dimension was it?

I understand what you are saying but it is best to focus on when it says "You scored higher or lower."
The best thing is to look at your notes that you document regarding the video, you want to see where you gave too much credit and little credit. After looking at your notes then look at your face page to a see based on your notes if it is Low, Mid or High. You also need to look at your descriptive page to ensure that it is a L,M,H.

Based on what you observed you want to see the frequency, depth and the duration on what the teacher(s) are saying and doing throughout the time of the observation. Be careful of the "Halo & Horns" - "The teacher was really nice and sweet or Wow, she was mean to the child."

It is important to highlight important information that is in the descriptive page low, mid and high for each dimension.

Become one with your manual. Your manual is your friend. Good luck.

Yes, you are correct in your thinking. If you scored it a 3 and it says you "scored higher than the master coders", then it was scored a 1. It's much easier to figure out when you score it a 3 and this is the case, however, if you scored it higher than a 3, it wouldn't be possible to know the exact score. If that makes sense. :)

I am not sure that I understand your response. Let me give another example. If I said it was a 5 and my results showed I was too high, should I assume that a 4 was not the correct response either.

I don't understand. I sent another scenario, but did not get a response. Does the Teachstone staff answer these questions ?

    Hello Loretta,
I'm sure you received my individual response to your question yesterday but I wanted to follow up with this group discussion as well. You are correct in your thinking: If you coded the dimension a 3 and was told in the feedback that you over coded this dimension, you could assume that the code was a 1. I would encourage you though to focus more on your coding trends than specific master codes for the reliability videos. If you have a tendency to over code, consider the following:  High range scores reflect the consistent presence of evidence of effective interactions as defined by the CLASS manual. A pattern of over coding suggests that there may be something about either the teacher or the activity that the observer liked. However, the CLASS does not take our opinions into account. It's not about what we like; it's about what we see. As you code, be sure to keep the following in mind.

    • The definition of the dimension
    • The presence or absence of indicators
    • The frequency, duration, and efficacy/quality of the interactions.

If you would like to get more individualized feedback and support, you can reach out to our CLASS Specialists at contact@teachstone.com or 866-998-8352. Some one would be happy to email you more information or talk with you by phone.

Correct, if 5 was too high, then 4 would also not be the Master Code. However, you cannot know if the Master Code is 3, 2, or 1 based on the feedback you got.

I believe Teachstone staff do review what is posted. To answer your question the focus is not on the score but the focus is on what you observed in the video and what you documented. It is best to focus on when it says "You score higher then the master score or lower then the master score." You want to see where you gave too much credit and not enough credit. When I see this on my final board I go back and review my notes to see where I miss it.

    I hope this was helpful.
