Are there standard rates of pay for certified CLASS Observers or a "rule of thumb" to use for these rates?

Hi @Duane Little, this question has come up a couple of times and it doesn't seem like there is a standard rate, but one that varies by geography, age-level, any special needs (language, setting, etc.).

When this question came up in our Facebook Community a while back, these were some of the answers:
    • We pay our consultants $60/hour
    • One thing to consider is whether or not they want you to simply turn in score sheets or if they want you to write detailed reports
    • $100 observation and then mileage
    • $200 per observation
    • $150-250 per observation plus mileage

Interested to hear what others say!

@Liz Savage,  Does the "per observation" mean for each classroom observed?  And I'm curious how many programs actually contract outside sources to observe their classrooms, as opposed to in-house monitoring.  Responses are welcome.  Thanks.

    Hi,
Becoming a CLASS consultant has it plus and minuses.  The plus is the flexibility and the minus is that you don't have job security and really don't make that much. I charge (average) $75-100 per observations.  The cost can go up or down based on the program's needs, who covers transportation, meals and hotel cost.  Please make sure you have an attorney draw up a contract...this cost money too. Make sure you have everything in writing.  I do mean everything I.e. exactly what you will be doing for the program, scores, write-ups, end of day/week/assignment, PD w/o staff/administration, all cost etc.  I don't recommend becoming a CLASS consultant unless you are consulting locally and/or you have financial security.  If you want to make a few extra bucks it's a good side jig but not a career type job.
In my opinion, it is a good idea to have an independent CLASS observer vs in house CLASS observers because you get an objective view (Obs).  I have found that when you do in-house Obs relationships come into play when scoring.  I also recommend that programs switch out or rotate consultants because after a while you get to know the staff and program...too well.
Another plus to this job is that you get the opportunity to meet so many wonderful and interesting people.  🤗

In reading your post regarding CLASS Obs pay rates vs, in house Obs; I thought about our staff meeting last evening not so much of the rate but an invite for in house Obs and director suggested to wait for CLASS Obs instead. My intuition says let us hear up front how to prepare
for what is to come from CLASS Obs.(we expect to pay for serve children in our care).

    Hi,

I've been conducting CLASS assessments for several counties for the pass 8 years and they all pay different rates. I include my raw scoresheets and a detailed report. The pay varies from $600 to $950 per assessment. I definitely would not do a detailed assessment for less than $600 per.

    Hi Carlos,

When you say "per assessment," do you mean each classroom observation is between $600 - $950?  Or is that per program assessment?  Thanks for your input.

Hi @Zulma Inez Colon, A Certified CLASS Observer has demonstrated a solid understanding of the CLASS tool and is qualified to code classrooms using the CLASS observation tool. To become a CLASS Observer, you would first take the CLASS Observation Training for the age level you plan to observe, and then you'd need to pass the CLASS Reliability Test, which involves reliably scoring or coding a series of 5 videos of classrooms.

Hi @Stephanie Smith, I shared some notes with Zulma above that may be helpful to you. Here's what it said:

This question came up last year, and people were very surprised by the seemingly high rates that independent assessors may be paid.

    This was my response then:

    "Consulting is a good gig."

It seems like it, doesn't it?  But, in reality, it's not always as it seems.  Let's take the high range of $250 per assessment.
Really, you can only do one per day.
Start with 180 school days that allow for assessments.
Take out a day per week (36) for administrative work (scheduling, reporting, billing, reliability, etc).

    That leaves 144 assessment days.
    $250 x 144 = $36,000
Then remember that these are freelancers, so they pay their own benefits, taxes, etc.  You might figure that around 30% that they need to pay.
    $36,000 - 30% ($10,800) = $25,200 take home pay.

Obviously there are higher and lower versions of these numbers.  But I doubt anyone gets rich doing program assessments!
