I work with one-year olds and I would like some advice on biting and putting items in their mouths. I know this is a one-year-old thing but I would like ideas or techniques that I can use to discourage biting and putting things in their mouths. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, there.  I don't think you can keep children of this age from putting items in their mouths as many are engaged in oral sensory exploration and others are teething.  I would instead think about providing your children with items that are safe and appropropriate to chew on, and then redirecting them to these items when they try to chew on something else.  I also have done a fair amount of directing kids with what the purpose of an item is, e.g., giving them a crayon and paper only when I am by their side and showing them over and over again that the crayon is for drawing on the paper and not for their mouth.  Hope this helps.

Maybe try a biting ball necklace. Its a black necklace with rubber balls on it. This can help satisfy that urge to bite or chew on something. We use it for a 4 year old in our class who bites when she is frustrated and sticks things in her mouth. She is learning to use that instead.

I have always kept three containers by my sink, soap, water and bleach solution so whatever they put in their mouth could be sanitized immediately. At this age they bite a lot because it is the quickest way to get their message across and it gets lots of attention. Stay close to the biter if possible and model other ways to express anger since the language is not there yet.

    Hi

First I would like to know if this one year old is he or she teething. Does the child have anxiety? What is happening before the child bites? If he or she is on the younger side and teething you may want to ask the family to invest in a teething necklace that can also work with anxiety. If the child doesn't s an older one meaning almost two years ol you may need to observe to see why his he or she biting. His he or she verbal or no. Verbal. Maybe using jester to communicate with them, pictures. Biting at this age is common but you will have to look closely to see what's happening before the biting and putting things in their mouth.

    Hope this helps

Wow, there has been such fantastic advice in this thread! In regards to the biting, I also recommend listening to our Teaching with CLASS podcast episode - Behavior is Communication: Understanding and Responding to Tantrums and Meltdowns! It was published in 2021, so you will have to scroll down a little, but it's a really good one. You can also find the resource associated with the episode here! I also found another resource you might be interested in, Understanding and Responding to Children Who Bite.

    I really hope this helps!

    Best,
    Allison
