What types of visual aids can help preschool age students who don't yet have expressive language  but DO understand english? We work with ages 3-5. We do English, Spanish and ASL in combinition with picture cards.

As lead teacher in a Pre-K classroom, we used laminated pictures with words posted throughout the classroom. Since you are also using ASL, you can also use the signs on the images. This is a great learning opportunity for others to learn as well.

For emotional reactions and behaviors, The use of a nonbreakable hand mirror allows children to see their reactions/reflections. Also can create an emotional chart or handmade book using the actual face(s)of the child(ren) they can use to communicate the feeling

For choosing centers/play spaces/activities.. sometimes a tangible pointer object can be used to determine a child's interest with follow-up verbal feedback from the caregiver.

Daily VISUAL schedule with also with the actual child(ren) pictures with them participating. This worked well with a 2-3 yo male student with autism since he was still progressing through the egocentric stage.
