Hello, does anyone have an article or resource they can share about supporting early educators dealing with challenging behaviors from their students? Thank you.

Hi Alex. I see you are in CA. The CA Teaching Pyramid is available online and is used by schools across the state
    https://cainclusion.org/teachingpyramid/.
It is a fabulous resource for Challenging Behaviors with articles, materials for building positive behaviors and strategies for observing the cause of behaviors.
Linda Brault is the author of a book called “Challenging Behaviors” and helped establish the Teaching Pyramid in CA based on CSEFEL

Thank you Sandi for these great recommendations. I will take a closer look at the CA Teaching Pyramid and look into getting the book.

In St.Landry Parish we use Conscious Discipline. It is a great tool that we use to redirect behavior.

Yes. What normally seems to happen is I have to redirect over and over. But it can also be the environment. I have a kiddo who's a biter and hitter. And when my class is full he does the opposite of what I say. However, when it's just him, me and a few others he's an Angel. He's moving up to the 2s class soon so he may be realizing he's getting older and is not adapting to class like he used to

Behavior is communication. When children's needs are not being met, behaviors come up. Looking for the underlying root of the behavior and addressing it is the most effective way of addressing behavior challenges.

    Common root causes of behavior

    • Expectations are not being clearly taught
    • Maladaptive behaviors are more effective than healthy behaviors (e.g.: hitting a peer gets them access to the toy more quickly than asking nicely)
    • Developmentally inappropriate expectations (e.g.: circle time lasting 30 minutes in preschool)
    • Trauma
    • Internal factors (hungry, tired)
    • Emotion regulation difficulties
    • Inconsistent or unpredictable environment
    • Untreated neurodevelopmental or mental health challenges
    • Skill deficit
    • Sensory environment is not meeting their needs (e.g.: not enough movement/sensory input, or too much loud noise/vivid colors/clutter/bright lights etc...)
    • Feeling unsafe
Here is an article that discusses some ideas for setting up a classroom environment where all students feel safe and can succeed: https://www.edutopia.org/article/fostering-feeling-security-young-students

Edutopia also has an option where you can sign up for monthly emails summarizing the latest research.
