Have other administrators used video recording of their teachers in action, to observe and conduct reviews?  Or do you use them for the teachers benefit, for self reflection and setting goals with each teacher?

I use them for observations and reflections and after the teacher reviews it, I let them decide whether to keep it and compare at a later time or not. It is usually just for their viewing unless with their permission we use it for training. It is a helpful tool in setting goals also.

Being videotaped is really intimidating (according to everyone I've ever recorded - including myself!) and so I would never do it for the purpose of giving a review.  Especially if an increase in pay is tied to it. I would use recordings gently and gradually so that your teachers get used to it and then use it in a way that allows you to focus on their strengths. They will usually be able to identify needs for improvement (we are so hard on ourselves) and so you can take that and help them reflect around it. And be sure to give them feedback on the changes or attempts at changes that you see moving forward!

    Good luck.
