Hello! We do not provide written justifications for our calibration videos, but the webinar that comes with the calibration provides the justifications for the codes as part of the presentation. I would reach out to contact@teachstone.com if your staff needs help accessing the webinar. Our master coders ...

It sounds like maybe you had indicator ranges of H, H, H, L, H? Is that correct? Or were there other indicators that weren't high range? Remember that assigning a score isn't an exact formula. A mix of low and high would usually put you in the mid range, but with that indicator spread, a 6 could also ...

These aren't webinars, but we have a couple of basic video intros to CLASS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjAPrt9XOqo) and CLASS observations (https://info.teachstone.com/resources/videos/teachers-take-class-observations) that might be helpful orientations for a teacher who's new to CLASS.

Hi Sharline! "Forced" anything sounds like a bummer, and I commend you for trying to figure out how to support children's engagement and learning when you're not able to follow their interests with the flexibility you might prefer. Luckily, Concept Development is really just about *how* you talk to ...

I'm not a care provider, so I'm sure you'll get some more qualified/practical suggestions from some of our other CLC members, but I sooo relate to this question. My now-5-month-old started daycare a couple of months ago, and she was the only nonmobile baby in a class of 12 or so. I was so worried for ...

Hi Ann! For a while, Teachstone piloted a Literacy Focus dimension as part of Instructional Support. This dimension was not ultimately integrated into the CLASS tool and should not be captured during observations. We removed it from the dimensions guides in 2014, so perhaps you are using some older ...

I'm sure you'll get pretty widely varying answers to this question! And lots of strong opinions too! I just switched my 2.5-year-old daughter to undies over Christmas break, and I would say it was relatively immediate-we had two days with accidents, then never again over the last few months. The *only* ...

One of our CLASS specialists, Marnetta Larrimer, recently gave leading virtual PK lessons a try. You can hear her reflections on the experience in this webinar: https://info.teachstone.com/webinar-how-to-support-meaningful-interactions-in-virtual-or-hybrid-classrooms For the read aloud, she made ...

Good question, Emily! I think what you're likely remembering is the idea that using *pet* names is less respectful. As Mary-Margaret notes, pet names include things like "baby" "sweetie" "honey" "sugar" etc. Pet names are different from nick names in that they are not specific to the child. Using ...

Hello Moshe! The technical appendix in the back of the CLASS manual includes research about the stability of CLASS scores across the day, the week, the school year, etc. If you don't have a manual to refer to, all of the technical appendices are actually available on the website: http://info.teac ...

Hi Jodi! Transition times are an important part of children's days, and smoothly getting from one activity to the next is one indicator of a well-ordered classroom. So CLASS observers do include these times in their observations. Other commenters have offered some good suggestions about the types ...

Hi Ann! You've already got some great responses, which affirm your thinking that Concept Development has many applications in scenarios beyond strictly academic ones. I like the exemplar "Problem Solving How to Divide Supplies Evenly" (available both in the myTeachstone Learning Resources and the ...

@Tamara De Los Santos I think you're absolutely right. It's all about the "why"! The purposes behind observations can be so varied that one "right" protocol can't be defined (and thus isn't included in the manual, which is mostly limited to describing how to collect accurate scores). Before scheduling ...

The *ability* to re-watch all or part of the video is available in the system. This is important, in case you are unexpectedly interrupted while testing or have any technical difficulties. Certainly some people take advantage of this and re-watch to try to capture everything that happens; however, there ...

The Toddler tool is for children 15 to 36 months, so 3 and 4 year olds would be covered by the Pre-K CLASS tool. "Pre-K" can mean so many different things, so this was a good clarifying question! ------------------------------ Marielle Sheridan VA ------------------------------

@Cathleen McAuliffe Thanks for sharing an example of this issue from your experience! Your post really draws attention to the fact that double coding can be an effective way of making these conversations happen and checking our own biases. I said in my earlier post that I think the CLASS measure itself ...

Cathleen, thanks for bringing this topic to the group! There is so much interesting and important conversation to be had about this. I think we should never be surprised when someone points out that there is an element of racial bias coming into play -- they're usually right. White supremacy is sometimes ...

I put a longer post in the Coaches & Observers group, but I figured I'd drop a note here as well for anyone finding this thread :) Putting babies down for a nap *is* a codeable activity, but once the child dozes off, we can't really observe any interactions, so the cycle should stop if all children are ...
