We recently had discussions about how important back and forth conversations are after reading this recent MIT study. However, that doesn't mean parallel and self-talk lose importance. Do you have any other tips for remembering to use or encouraging others to use self and parallel talk?

That reminds me of a great guest blog post by a member of our community, @Mary Lu Love

Self- and Parallel Talk: Not Just for the Non-verbal
I was quite taken aback recently when an intern completing her first semester with a group of young toddlers told me, "My goal when I started the semester was to use more self-talk and parallel talk, but the toddlers are now talking, so that's no longer needed." How to respond?

I find that infant/toddler teachers, because of the nature of their work and the age of their children, are great at this. To encourage and increase this type of interaction for infant/toddler teachers as well as preschool teachers, I discuss the correlation between self and parallel talk and dual language development. I remind teachers that, "language acquisition of any kind is more so related to the quantity and quality of experience with the language. It is not always easy to think of a great extension question in the moment, but you can always describe what you or the children doing."

Thank you for sharing and moving forward you will be blessed because you have served others before considering your own needs at that moment. We learn from each other and I pretty sure you are a great asset to anyone around you. God bless you.

Agreed!  I tell my coachees that it is so important for children to hear all the teachers' voices in the classroom.

No I don't have any additional information about self and parallel talk. The MIT researchers stated  very good points about how language is acquired through self and parallel talk.
