  • 1.  Should I conduct an observation during low attendance times?

    Hello, CLASS Community:

Long time listener, first time caller.  I am thinking of conducting Pre-K observations during the Holiday Week when only one of our sites are open for service. Since this is typically a lower attendance week, can I still conduct valid assessments if many of the children are not in attendance?

    Thank you,
    Dana

    Hello,
This is my first time posting as well!  I just faced this same situation...only about 1/2 of the children were in class the day I was scheduled to observe.  Due to scheduling constraints, I had to go ahead and complete the observation, but have concerns that I did not get a very clear picture of the CLASS Dimensions!

@Dana Yeary, your post cracked me up. I've always wanted to call into my favorite shows and say that. But I remain the long-time listener. :)

There's a blog post I recommend to answer this question: What's the Minimum Number of Children Needed for a CLASS Observation?

For our state's CLASS evaluation system, we also use the 50% standard. That threshold is difficult to meet as it gets close to Christmas (and Mardi Gras in the spring).  Regardless, we try to avoid the last week before the holidays because we often arrive to find special holiday programming that precludes observation. I have had to reschedule because of pictures with Santa, performances by storytellers or choirs, and once, a screening of The Polar Express for all the PreK classes in the cafeteria with children in their PJs!  Even when children eventually return to the classroom, it becomes difficult to fit in the four observation cycles required here given lunch, outdoor play, and naps.  Unless you can be sure you will find business as usual, it's probably best not to count on getting an observation completed close to the holidays.
