  • 1.  Mastering Efficient Transitions Between Activities

One of the most unique challenges presented to teachers in early childhood education include transitioning students from one activity to another with minimal disruption and distractions.
Consider the 5 steps outlined in this article.

    I've paraphrased as follows:

    1. Grabbing your students' attention right away
    2. Establishing a calm setting for transitioning
    3. Providing your students with detailed instructions on the transition
    4. Prompting/Initiating transition with your students
    5. Observing and ensuring students are executing the transition as it was explained

What are some techniques you all have found useful for facilitating smooth transitions? This is definitely a skill that requires a firm understanding of your students.

Most of the transition activities that I use during transition involve use of the hands and arms in some fashion.  This cuts down the need to remind the children to "keep their hands to themselves".  For instance when we are studying the unit on families I will have the children "burp the baby" when transitioning.  Mechanics and carpenters can "hammer" and "drill" with one hand into the other.  These types of things keeps students focused on the actions of their own bodies and not on what other peers might be doing.

    Becky,
Thank you for sharing your strategy @Becky Spencer! This certainly seems like a highly effective model to implement. I like the incorporation of hands and arms that allows the students to focus on their individual engagement instead of possibly interrupting others. This is a great transition model for early childhood education settings!

I like to let the kids know what we are doing before we do it and keep it fun by doing a funny song or dance.
