Parent Engagement with CLASS

Something we commonly we hear is how hard it can be to get parents involved in the classroom or aware of what teachers are doing on a daily basis. Do you have any suggestions, forms of communication, events you host, or other ways you keep families involved? What have you seen work?

    Liz,
Here are a few ideas: The teachers in our Head Start Program use an app called "Class Dojo" to communicate with parents daily. They also send home weekly "At-Home Activities" which are geared towards School Readiness. One Family Event we held was a "Family STEM Night" we had community people helping at different stations, it was one of the best Family Events held. I hope some of these ideas help.

    Hello,

My children's elementary school uses class dojo. Can daycare teachers use it as well?

I believe there are apps for childcare teachers as well but I'm not sure if it's called dojo or if it's a different app...

    Good morning,

I'm not sure if you know what Class DOJO is, but it's just a way of the teachers sending important information to the parents. I asked my center manager the same question yesterday in our meeting. I just think it's easier for the teachers to communicate more with the parents.

Our parents can come visit their child's classroom and spend time with their child at any time. Many parents bring goodies in and do little birthday parties with the whole class. We also do "color parties" on the last Friday of every month. For example, this month is red so every class will do a red party and they wear that color and ask parents to bring in that color food to have at snack. We also do a carnival night in the fall. Parents are asked to run booths to be involved or they can just bring their children to play games and have a good time with other families. We have a Thanksgiving dinner at the center for all the families as well. We do many things to try to keep the parents involved.

Hi Michele, in our center we do  monthly Parent chat, for one night and one hour . They discusse things that will help increase the knowledge about early childhood education. Communicate with the parents through the monthly News letter has been a good engagement and getting the feedback from the parents point of view.

When doing family engagement night the families were very engaged. The children enjoyed the 100 day activities. Moving from room to room and from activities with parents. I as a teacher enjoy having the family engagement night so much fun.

At our Head Start our teachers send home weekly notes every Friday.  These are a form that allows teachers to share concerns, growth, interests and include any relevant information for upcoming events.  We also have 3 family events a year in the evenings.  A Family Literacy event in the fall.  Science Fair in February and I'm Moving I"m Learning event in the spring.
