    Hello everyone!

I have a double outdoor sand box in my playground and unfortunately, I cannot use sand anymore.
Does anyone of you know anything else I can use instead of sand and where I can buy it? Something that is fun, safe and developmentally appropriate for Pre-K students?

    Thank you!

    Hello,
In our Head Start program we can use leaves, pine cones, bird seed, dirt, and sand. That is I know of right now. I thing there is other things that could be used. The bird seed could be got almost anywhere.

I'm curious- why can't you use sand anymore?  Has it already been removed from the sandbox?  I've never heard a Preschool program that wasn't allowed to use sand.  As long as it is properly cared for and covered when not in use, sand is very appropriate for preschool children.

Yes it is very appropriate, children love it! We have sand box in the classroom, and the sand outside has already been removed.

If the reason sand is being taking away from your outdoor environment you can try and make homemade sensory sand or kinesthetic sand. Less mess and more fun.
    5 cups sand
    1 cup flour
1 cup oil (canola is cheap baby oil smells good)

Depending on the size of the sandbox, anything that would go in a sensory bin might be fun. Some things I've seen that can be cheap and easy to find are popcorn kernels, beans, scraps of wrapping paper or shredded paper, rice, rocks, and dirt with fake flowers and gardening tools. Maybe ask the kids to brainstorm some different options that they'd want to play with!
