Naturally loud teachers

Hello Teachstone community. As I score a classroom I am struggling with a teacher whose was high in all three categories, but her presence was large and her voice level dominated the room.  When she was talking I could not hear anything her assistants or children were saying, though they were all within 6 feet. Am I just showing a bias?  If not, would this affect the ILF score?
    Thanks

I also have this problem/dilemma.  It is usually neighboring teachers, not my coachees.

As a child I was very shy, reticent, and I project myself into those scenarios and think of how I would feel...

My concern is that it could well be a cultural norm with some of the loud teachers and then I would worry about bias.

    Great topic.
    I run into that too.....
When the teacher is leading circle time or reading a story, I mention that varying their voice level is a good strategy......from low to high, excited, scared, soft, whisper.......and have the children try out the different voices and repeat with them.......helps with animation.

I am also currently dealing with this with a couple teachers-both fairly new to the profession. It does sometimes affect the score especially during redirections as it tends to sound harsher than if the voice were lowered. It's a hard one. I don't want them to tone it down to the point where they lose their enthusiasm, but the constant noise level gets to be alot. I am hoping that maybe videotaping and self reflection will help. Would love to hear more on how others address this issue.

Because we have open doors with current families, prospective families, volunteers, prospective employees, donors in and out of our classrooms I do think it is important that perception is often very different than intention.

I had a similar experience recently just like this.  I felt uncomfortable because it felt like the scores ended up being based mostly on what was said by one teacher...... and not a reflection of both teachers.  In order to hear the other teacher, I felt like I had to get uncomfortably close to her.  Any insights folks can share would be appreciated.

Thank you for all your help.  I will be using your great advise in coaching this teacher.

I am still pondering and reading the CLASS Manuel to see where to reflect a loud teacher in scoring her CLASS observation.  As I processed what you have said and what I read in the Manuel, I think it will be reflected in Positive Climate, (having a voice that shows respect for the class),Teacher Sensitivity (not recognizing her loud voice shuts down a shy child), or in Instructional Learning Formats, (using a range of auditory modality).

Do you think I am on track?

    Hi Mary,

I am one of those teachers who are loud as you say by nature. I talk loud and sing loud, when I engage with the children sometimes I am even more excited than they are about what they are building or creating. I am not intentionally trying to be loud nor do I want to have the appearance of being overpowering because of my voice tone. How can I be helped to tone down?

One idea that has helped me as teacher mentor when working with teachers who are naturally loud is to have them turn the CD player on to a comfortable volume. I then ask them to match the volume of the music, this usually works best with children's music. I do have them keep the music playing throughout the day. This has helped them realize what volume is appropriate and what would be considered too loud. I hope this helps

I am naturally soft spoken and it can be hard to work around people who are loud. It feels like I am screaming when I raise my voice even though I am just talking louder than I usually do. Sometimes with a CD player on the volume of the classroom gets louder and louder and I have turned off the CD player and just sat on the floor playing and this has lowered the classroom noise level by a lot.

Well to me it depends on the situation.  There are times where I use soft voices and the children continue to do what they want. There are other times where the children stop and look at the teachers like what's wrong with you. The children al know when the teachers care about them whether raising voices or not. Now if the teachers are yelling for no reason that's different  but in the prek class we raise our voice but its after tell the children ok I spoke softly now you put me to the point where I have to raise my voice because  you didn't listen to my words the first two times I tried to get your attention.
