The most important thing

  • 1.  The most important thing

Have you seen this recent article: Why Preschool is the 'Most Important Year' In a Child's Development? It talks about the importance of purposeful play, open-ended questions, and teaching self-regulation. It's all about teacher-child interactions! And it's not just PreK- "Sometimes policymakers view pre-K as the answer for closing the achievement gap...We need to think about our whole system of care from birth to school."

"Don't worry about a gorgeous facility. The most important things to look for is how the adults interact with children. You want to see them engage with children in a way that is positive, nurturing and genuinely curious. In fact, according to her research, the best pre-K programs are staffed by trained teachers who know how to build students' self-regulation skills; nurture their creativity and curiosity; and foster an environment of playful learning."

I'm glad you posted this article i'm going to take a look at it, because I want to learn new ways to help expand my interactions with the children. There's so many resources and things that I am curious to learn about CLASS and better educate myself.

Thanks for sharing the article. I love being able to share articles with my staff that help them understand my philosophy on teaching preschool. I have the most amazing teachers so it is just a reinforcement of what they already know. It always helps to be encouraged when you are doing the right things.

Thanks for posting this. I appreciate the comment about  some policy makers thinking that pre-k is the answer. Pre-K is great, but research shows that one year of really effective pre-k does not inoculate a child against a less than stellar K or 1st grade experience. Pre-k can build a solid foundation, but what comes after is really important! It's kind of like vaccinations. We need to have all of the shots in the series for the vaccination to be effective.

This article makes me wonder how we improve the quality of interaction of parents and children in my program. I want to help parents know how to ask open ended questions.  I want to help parents use the child's interests and curiosity to build the child's foundations.

This was a great article.  I'm new to child care and have only been running my daycare for almost a year.  However, I've been a parent for more than 16 years to 3 children.  I've had parents try using the reward system with their children with situations like potty training.  I'm all for rewarding children on occasions for huge accomplishments.  However, I don't believe rewarding them for every single time they complete a daily life task (bathroom, homework, etc.).  I feel like this teaches them to always expect a reward for even the most basic of tasks.

    Thanks for sharing Liz,
I totally agree with this article. The activities we plan the resources we provide,
all that is fine but in the end what matters is  a teachers attitude and interaction with the child!
How you make the child feel is going to stay with him/her forever.
    Thanks for sharing

This is a great article.  I immediately shared it with my PreK teachers.

I agree with Ms. Bouchard that it's imperative that educators and policymakers need to be made aware of what developmentally appropriate practices look like in the PreK classroom.  I would go one step further and say that parents need to be made aware too.  Too often am I being approached by parents who worry that their child is not academically ready for Kindergarten.

My question is how can we effectively convey this message to parents when they are being frightened into hearing that Kindergarten is what 2nd grade used to be?

I agree with this article 100%.  Positive adult interactions is so important.  I teach a State and Head Start class at a Title 1 school.  So many of my kids come from such tough environments.  We as teachers have the power to help kids learn so many important skills. I have so many kids who are struggling with self-regulation. It have had to take a step and make trust and safety is felt with kiddos before helping them.
