I love this video from Edutopia! Such a quick look at encouraging autonomy in PreK Classrooms.

In the CLASS® dimension Regard for Student Perspectives, there is an indicator called Support for Autonomy. This means the ability to self-govern or make your own decisions about what, how, and why you do what you do. What strategies do you all use? Any tips for those that find this one tricky?

A few takeaways from the video to try in your classroom:

    1. Building Independence and Confidence:

    • Help kids feel confident by letting them make choices and explore safely.
    • When children can decide for themselves, it helps them become more independent.
    • Giving kids responsibilities makes them feel capable and in control.

    2. Learning through Play and Responsibilities:

    • Play is an important way for children to learn and grow.
    • Introduce small tasks and routines to teach organization and order.
    • Offering choices during the day lets children practice making decisions.

    3. Promoting Cooperation and Leadership Skills:

    • Encourage kids to work together and solve problems as a team.
    • Teach empathy by helping children understand and care about others.
    • Mistakes are okay! Create an environment where kids learn from their experiences.

    Remember:

    • Daily routines help children know what to expect and feel secure.
    • Responsibilities, like classroom jobs, teach kids about being accountable.
    • By fostering independence, responsibility, and social skills, you're preparing kids for success in the future.
