Hi Anna!
From an assessor lens, this post really resonated with me. Reflecting more deeply on Teachstone's foundations and developmental views helped me better understand that Clarity of Learning Objectives captures how teachers organize children's developing attention and self-regulation. Making that connection clarified for me why CLO is positioned within the Classroom Organization domain.
A strong example of Clarity of Learning Objectives through advanced organizers I once observed occurred during center-time planning with dry erase boards. Children independently drew their center plans after completing small-group work and then, referencing their drawings, shared with a teacher which center they planned to visit and what they intended to do. Teachers asked intentional follow-up questions to clarify those plans and later, as they rotated through centers, checked back with children about how their plans were unfolding, helping them stay focused and connected to their original ideas.
This example reinforced for me how CLO can be observed through intentional teacher interactions, even within open-ended, child-centered play.

π Focus of the Week: Clarity of Learning Objectives π
This CLASS dimension invites us to reflect on how clearly teachers communicate what children are learning and why it matters.
In high-quality classrooms, teachers:
β
State or restate the learning goal in child-friendly language.
β
Connect activities to those goals throughout the lesson.
β
Help children understand how what they're doing supports their learning.
π Reflect:
How can you support teachers in expressing learning objectives more clearly during their interactions? What examples or strategies have you seen that work well?
