I have done several observations lately where they are using Heggerty.  It is VERY rote and I am having trouble scoring it.  Are there any resources for observing this program?

We have problems with that sometimes. We have a 10 minute Phonological Awareness block that is Heggerty like and very rote. We added hand and body motions to get more participation and encouraged teachers to do the best they can!

THANK YOU for posting this-my district is using Heggerty this year. We have been using CLASS for many years.  I am in the process of supporting my PreK and Kindergarten teachers with making Heggerty "CLASSy."  Is anyone else facing this challenge?

I have seen Heggerty implemented very well. I have also seen it implemented very poorly. Heggerty can be used effectively as a brief transition activity or in a small group where more student leadership and choice can be implemented. I observed one very skilled teacher incorporate Heggerty skills and strategies spontaneously during free play in response to children showing interest in the sounds of new words that arose during dramatic play.

I agree, though, that Heggerty is too often used as a long, teacher led, rote activity, resulting in children being unable to effectively connect with the intended phonological awareness strategies and concepts.

    Hi Teresa,
I think you might mean Heggerty. The lowest that curriculum goes is early PK. It is explicit daily lessons on phonemic awareness, but it sounds like your children would be too young.
