Observing during Music and Movement

    Grateful day to all!!

I need help when observing during Music and Movement!

When observing, I ask the teachers to not alter their schedule and sometime Music and Movement time occurs. The teachers allow the children to select the music and have them to follow the directives of the songs. The normally score low during this cycle.

How can a teacher make Music and Movement effective for CLASS?

    I am seeking suggestions.

    Thanks in advance!

Oh I love this question! Do you mind if I pose it to our Facebook community as well?

The first thing that came to my mind was this blog post that was written for families during COVID, but might have some helpful ideas: https://info.teachstone.com/blog/music-with-children-at-home-why-it-matters-and-6-fun-activities

I would LOVE to work with CLASS to create a movement/music position statement/resource material (or something of the like) where teachers receive music/movt activities that increase positive climate, language, etc. This is my forte. Either way, I'll come up with something to help.

    Dr. Hunter,

Have you created or do you have any resources on "CLASSy" Music and Movement activities for teachers. I am a CLASS observer as well as a program administrator and this is a time of the day that has challenged teachers during observations this cycle. Any direction is appreciated!

I was wondering if there is a minimum limit of children in a classroom during observation for FCCH and Center-Based sites.

There are lots of opportunities during music and movement to cover most of the dimensions. Is the teacher participating and having fun? Is the teacher responding to a child who is not participating or having trouble participating? Is the teacher allowing for choice and opportunity for self-expression? Was the teacher proactive in reminding the student of the rules? Is there a transition when music is over? Is the teacher using any props such as scarves, streamers, different types of music, different volume? Is the teacher relating the music to the real world? Is the teacher using songs that children can verbally respond to or sing along, or learn advanced vocabulary or vocabulary in another language? Research has shown that music is a great tool for early learning, especially for boys. We need to make more use of music and movement as a valuable teaching time.

Thank you so much for this response. There is so much learning and important skills happening during music and movement (as well as equally important calming/relaxing, joyful experiences) and it seems so wrong that teachers could be penalized in their CLASS observation if they're singing, dancing/moving with the children but not having a conversation with them at that time.

I love moving and dancing with my students. That's exercise for me and it pumps up the children in the morning. During calm down after the workout we talk about our heartbeat and other things they bring up.

I normally select one of the songs that relates to out theme such as This Is The We Build Our House. We act out each tool in out kit as each one names it and demonstrate it to the class. That is Art, Social Studies, Cognitive, Physical, etc.
