In this episode on Teaching with CLASS, @Veronica Fernandez and @Deirdre Manley share their experience using the CLASS tool in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Listen then share.
We want to hear from you. The list of behavioral markers are not an exhaustive list, so tell us, what does it look like in your classrooms? What other examples or behavioral markers do you wish were included? What does Emotional Support look like in your classrooms? What kinds of interactions can encourage warm relationships?
"There is one (behavioral marker) that is a warm calm voice. It's a stereotype of Hispanics, particularly Cubans, which is my background, but we tend to demonstrate our warmth and our love in very different ways. We tend to be loud and boisterous and very physical in our love. And our voices are not always calm or warm as it may be described in the descriptor pages. So somebody who is not familiar with this particular culture may hear an elevated tone in the voice or may think that they're screaming. It may sound like it's actually a behavioral marker of negative climate, where in reality it is a demonstration of respect and excitement and positive affect and enthusiasm that the teacher might be demonstrating with children."
