I have recently been assigned to school age kids so children from K-6th and so far I'm just loving every minute but I will say I have been noticing it takes an awful long time to just get one activity together I'm constantly having to repeat myself ask them to lower voices without another teacher they've known to come and help me get it along it doesn't make me feel great when this happens because it's as if I have no control over our class they  I just need some ideas on what else could I try because I would say when I started it was all new to me and as well as them you know to be with a new teacher

I don't work with school age kids, but I have helped out in this classroom.  I do know that they try and intimidate a new teacher when they walk in.  I try not to let them know that they may be intimidating, but try to see what they are working on and ask questions about it.  For example, when i went into the school age classroom, a group of boys were working on a puzzle, I asked questions about it.  It was a pokemon puzzle and I asked them about the characters and also that "wow, this puzzle looks difficult with all the different colors".  The one boy responded, "that it wasn't difficulty, you just had to take your time".  Also, they told me the names of the characters.  I believe you just have to show an interest with them.

As for an activity, try to make it fun or have them give you some help with it.  I work with two year olds, so my activites are much different than yours.

Good luck - remember it takes patience and flexibility (learned from week 6 podcast).

HI there I hope you are well, one thing they will do and do often is try and push your boundaries, and your buttons in any way they can, they know you are new , and a new teacher they see and think can be intimidated . don't let them do this, in the champions classroom i work in and help run its school age. We have a time out period not like you would think as a ordinary one, nothing like that, we have the kids owe time, like say they are disorderly you ask them more then three times, to level one voices thats whisper voices, or ask them to site down more then once , they owe you time, as in from an activity others get to do that activity they owe like 5 min out of it. The time is spent sitting out reflecting on what they could have done to not get to what they are doing now. this works in all cases in our classroom because kids don't like time taken from free time.   Another thing to try is level voices,  level 1 is whisper voices 2 is inside voices 3 is too loud and 4 is way to loud time taken off of free time.  Try these things to get a hand on the classroom you may find it works for you as well.

It May Take them a little bit longer in time to adjust, trust me I been here. They see a new face and a new style of teaching and learning, because we not all do it the same, or have the same tolerance. Try not to let them see you sweat, some can pick up on emotion and or frustration, I'm not saying you intentionally have any, or any that we may or may not notice. Do an attention grabber, also speak firmly yet softly. Make it fun, yet remind them of the dogs and don't. As they see you routinely do and say things, they will catch on. Include them in the making of the assignments if you can. I also learned that the ones that seems not interested or not paying attention, will sometimes need your help later, you could use that time to, in order to get their attention, and explain the importance of the lesson again, and why it's important  too listen to your teachers. I myself had this issue, and my routine and voice stayed the same, yet again excitement, fun, using the tools in cda classes are helpful as well. Look at the domains and things, be intentional, encouraging and understanding, you got this!
