Dear community,

I had a question about the use of 'pet' names for the respect indicator. The manual says for the middle range: The teacher sometimes uses children's names during interactions or to get their attention, but at other times he does not address them by name or instead uses a pet name. If the teacher sometimes uses frases like 'darling', should I score in the middle range? Can I find any information about why it is better for a positive climate to only use the childrens names?

Children's names are an important part of their identity and should be given the sense of importance they deserve. A pet name is something that may be used for many people, or everyone around you, but your name is yours. Using children's names not only validates their identity and uniqueness, but encourages other children and adults to do the same by modeling this respectful behavior.

Toddlers still in the process to learn who they are and how to identify them self, that it’s why they always should be called by their names.

When we have our first visit during enrollment, we have families indicate if they have a preferred name they want used with their child. Often times our children have indigenous names they prefer. I'm not sure this falls in a 'pet' name or not, but it would not be their government/ID name, so to speak. As far as the 'darling' goes, I feel that could be a regional expression, if that makes sense.
