Hello all

I was in a preschool classroom of about 19 children today, (I was not doing a CLASS observations) when the teacher instructed the children to put their heads down. I was wondering where that would fall in CLASS? I did say try a different strategy, that might fall in negative climate. As I read the manual I really couldn't see where it would fall. Any insight will be appreciated! 

Good afternoon, yes you are correct. That is not a practice and falls in the negative climate. Perhaps the teacher need training to understand strategies to support classroom management.

this would only be a negative climate if the teacher was using a punitive tone or using it as a harsh punishment. It could be sorted into behavior management. We need to be careful that our biases don’t enter in here. I would look at the children and see what their reaction was were they able to comply or there’s a lot of redirect that sometimes can lead to negative climate but it doesn’t necessarily make it negative climate.
