    Hello,

I am trying to find some resources for a teacher that I can share as examples of connections to the real world. Teacher is struggling on how this should look in her classroom and has asked for some examples. I have been struggling to find anything for her. Any ideas and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

    Hi Rachel,

Thank you for the response and the links. Unfortunately, this isn't quite what I am looking for. I am looking for examples of ways a teacher can connect classroom activities to children's everyday lives. Teacher is struggling with how to relate the classroom to the children's lives.

Hello! One way to do this is to spend a little time looking at the Regard for Child Perspectives Dimension.  This dimension looks at how educators pay attention (have regard) and show interest in what children are interested in. Allowing the children to lead conversations, and play (Student Expression) we can better understand how they see the world and encouraging them to express their thoughts and ideas.  By paying attention to what the children choose during free play, or how they answer questions or engage with materials.  For instance a classroom may have a writing area with a variety of materials available.  By observing what materials they select, how they use them, etc gives insight into their world.   Additionally, we look at the basis for all interactions, (look at The Emotional Support Domain" by truly getting to know our children, connecting with their personal lives will also give us insight into the "Real World" .

So let's shift to Concept Development and this indicator.  Educators can apply their thinking to what they experience outside the classroom, for instance a child may have a new sibling in the home and they show a lot of interest in the dramatic play area and dolls.  This would be a great opportunity to perhaps to a discussion one on one or with a group about babies, What do they know, what would they like to know. What do babies need?  What do they remember from being younger etc.  An educator could use this a catalyst for a theme of investigation.

I hope this helps, one other good resource is the CLASS card decks that have ideas on them for just what you are asking about!
