Moving from toddlers to preschool is a big transition. With toddlers, so much of your energy goes into caregiving, regulation, and following the child's lead. In preschool, those foundations still matter - but now you're layering in more intentional learning, language, and problem-solving. That takes time to get comfortable with.
A few ideas that often help:
1. You don't have to lose your toddler strengths.
Your warmth, responsiveness, and ability to read children's cues are huge assets in preschool. Those skills directly support Emotional Support and Classroom Organization. Think of preschool as building on those strengths, not replacing them.
2. Shift from "fixing" to "coaching."
Instead of jumping in to solve problems, try:
-
Asking open-ended questions ("What do you think would happen if…?")
-
Giving hints instead of answers
-
Narrating thinking ("I'm noticing this tower keeps falling. I wonder why…")
This supports Instructional Support while still feeling natural and relational.
3. Plan just a few intentional interaction moments each day.
You don't need to be "on" all the time. Pick one routine (centers, read-aloud, small group) and focus on:
-
Back-and-forth conversations
-
Extending children's ideas
-
Connecting concepts to their real lives
Small shifts add up.
4. Give yourself grace.
Adjusting your teaching style is a process, not a switch you flip. Preschool teaching is complex, and it's okay to feel a little off-balance at first. Reflection (which you're already doing!) is one of the strongest indicators of growth.
You're clearly on the right path. Keep noticing, trying one new strategy at a time, and leaning into the relationships you already build so well.
