I got my CLASS detailed score report and the observer marked that during 3 cycles I shushed the students thus affecting my score in a negative way. I shush then unconsciously like a tick. I'm not aware of it. It has been brought to my attention by my principal and para but they said that you could tell that it's not done intentionally and that I'm unaware of it. Should I have mentioned this to the observer prior to being observed. I just thought she would notice it wasn't intentional and therefore I didn't think it would affect my score. I mentioned the unconscious shushing to my neurologist in the past and he said it was common for patients who have partial focal seizures like me. If it'sa medical condition is there a way I can appeal the part of my score that was affected by this?

Hi Ms. Paton, I think you can appeal.

You might be able to get a new observation as well, but I don't think it hurts to tell the observer about it in the future.

I guess it will be good to let the observer know before hand about any medical concern like that. They observe what they see and rate accordingly. They have no prior knowledge. But nothing else should be shared. It is important for us to let them see our regular daily activity. And I always think a low score is an opportunity to fine tune our practice.

Hello,  As I read your post, I empathize with the situation.  Not for you to share a response, but some questions that came to mind.   Did the CLASS Observer(CO) say which dimension was affected by the shushing?  How do the children react to being shushed?  Do the children get quiet or continue what they are doing?

Suggestion:  Maybe watch a classroom recording so you can see when the shushing is happening and the children's reaction.
