This post is extremely timely for me. I am currently preparing to start my Pre-K recertification. I've been a certified observer on Pre-K since 2008 and each time I test, I have test anxiety!
A few things I do to prep for the testing is to make sure I have a quiet testing area, I am not distracted by other projects, and I have reviewed the CLASS manual.
My advice to those preparing to re-certifying:
- This is an open book test, so use the CLASS manual!
- Spend some time in Chapter 2!!!
- Have confidence in the manual! All the answers to the videos are within the longer descriptive pages.
- Classrooms don't have to be perfect to score in the high range! (See chapter 2)
- This assessment is capturing the average child's experience.
- Leave feeling and other thoughts and opinions out of coding.
- Key words such as "no", "sometime", and "often" are not the end all for determining a range for an indicator. You may have to review all the longer description pages to determine the correct range.
- Don't forget about the definition of each dimension. The definitions are at the top of each face page and helps to refine what interactions should be captured in the dimension.
- If you are not successful on the first attempt, contact Teachstone! There are full time specialists that give one-on-one support to those struggling with testing. They can't give you answers to test videos or assist during the testing process; however, they can review your attempt and assist with coding trend, clarification of dimension, and reflect on your own coding process.

Subject: Recertification
Has anyone else had trouble re-certifying? I am surprised that I've missed the mark on the first 2 attempts. Yes, I reviewed and even took the practice tests, although I've conducted many CLASS observations. I have concluded that this lies more in how each individual perceives the teacher(s) and classroom even though we are using the same coding method. If I don't hit the 3rd, I cannot imagine retaking the 2-1/2 day training. Anyone else?
