I have a three year old that is not interested in anything but idle play. The second we start with learning activities he starts to cry and say "I don't want to." How can I get him to want to engage in learning activities?

I had a kiddo who would do the same. I had talked to mom about what he plays with at home and she told me Minions. I asked her if she could bring me some to use in the room and I also had gathered some to use. I had gotten the kiddo more engaged and willing to participate. You could also use what he is paying with or where he is playing to practice and assess skills. Make it less of a learning activity or having to stop what he is doing.

I like the advice the other person gave, but that in turn is still learning.  It's listening, complying, you can do a back and forth play scheme, you can see what colors, shapes, etc they know.  LEARNING THROUGH PLAY IS LEARNING!!

It is impossible to get all three year olds to be interested in the same thing. That is why the teacher needs to move around the room and engage with the children as they are playing. By asking the right questions any play can be turned into a learning activity. There is a lot more learning going on when you base your lesson plans on the children's interest instead of a theme that is based on the time of year, holiday, etc.
