Good morning,

I have a question. My question is during the observation in my class, do I have to incorporate all of the instructional parts during my lesson throughout the whole day? For example, during the morning meeting do I have to incorporate Effective, facilitation, a Variety of Modalities and Materials, Student Interest, and clarity of Learning Objectives and more? Also, do I need to incorporate all of the elements for concept development, quality of feedback, language modeling, behavior management, etc in one lesson or all of the lessons throughout the entire day? So my question is if I incorporate all of the elements for quality of feedback during the morning meeting, do I need to incorporate it throughout the rest of the day such as during my small groups and centers? Please let me know. Thank you!

Best regards,

Hi Melida,

CLASS observations for Prek/VPK consists of 4 cycles of 20 minutes. After cycle 1, the observer will take 10 minutes to score in or outside of your classroom then will resume with cycle 2 and so forth until all of the cycles have been observed. For each cycle, the observer will be looking for you to incorporate the Dimensions that are mentioned above. The more you incorporate the behavior markers of the Dimensions, the higher your score will be. You do not have to incorporate all behavior markers for concept development, but the more "how" and "why" questions, problem solving, allowing the students to be creative, integration and connections to the children's lives, that you use when interacting with the students; will boost your score up for the Concept Development Dimension. The observation is about 2 hours. For the time that the observer is in your classroom observing you; I suggest that you incorporate as many behavior markers as you can. This includes when you are leading small groups; the observer will observe you as you teach your students that are in your group and the same goes for centers. During centers, you will need to interact and ask as many open ended questions as you can in order to began a back and forth conversation. I hope I have answered your question.

As a Pre-K CLASS observer I am looking for all of those things during a 20 minute cycle. Typically a CLASS observer will complete 3 or 4 cycles and then averaging those scores providing one score for the classroom. Depending on what time of day it is it can often be difficult to demonstrate all of those items.  In our program we have talked about different times of day and how you can incorporate all of the dimensions. So in short, I would say yes you would want to incorporate as much of the CLASS tool as possible throughout all times of day.
