Greetings!  Our group of assessors was discussing Feedback Loops at our meeting this morning.  When some of us were trained we were told that Feedback Loops needed to consist of at least 3 back and forth interactions, others were told that there needed to be at least 2.  In a training for Vermont educators this past week an assessor heard that it doesn't matter how many serve and returns there are.  We should just be looking to see if the child is receiving feedback in a way that increases the child's capacity.  We're looking for clarification on this topic.  Is there a number, or is it more qualitative?

It is absolutely qualitative. There is no "magic number" Feedback Loops consist of things such as Prompting Thought Process, Providing information, Encouragement and Affirmation and scaffolding. The goal of a feeback look is to respond to what a child does or says that gives us a window into their thinking or how they understand something.  Very closely related to Educator  Sensitivity.   The contingency of the response is the key---does this response help a child move forward into developing or expanding a schema.
