Hi

I`m scoring secondary video-material. How should I code "Learning targets/organization", when the cycle is in the middle of a class with students independently solving tasks in math? The teacher is monitorin and helping them.

Thanks

In the Secondary CLASS tool, you score Learning Targets/Organization based only on what is visible in the current cycle. If you are starting mid-stream during independent work, follow these three rules:

  • Look for Visual Cues: Check if the learning targets are posted on the board, in a digital slide, or on the students' handouts. If they are clearly visible and students are following them, this counts as evidence.

  • Listen for "Re-orientation": Since you missed the initial intro, look for the teacher circulating and reminding students of the "why" (e.g., "Remember, we are doing this to understand how X affects Y"). This serves as a verbal learning target within the cycle.

  • Assess Task Clarity: Does the independent work feel organized? If students are working purposefully without asking "What do I do next?", it indicates the lesson is well-organized, even if the formal "presentation" happened before the camera rolled.

Hi Ida,

I don’t have an answer for you but I wanted to say that it ROCKS! That you’re using this measure. I used Upper Elementary during a project and saw some amazing educators using CLASS to engage students. Hope you get your answer soon.
