In one of the classrooms there are a group of children that range in age of 33 month to 42 months. When assessing would we use the Toddler or Pre-K CLASS Assessment?

Great question! When deciding whether to use the Toddler or Pre-K CLASS Assessment, you'll want to consider both the age range and the developmental level of the children in the classroom.

Since your group ranges from 33 to 42 months, you're right on the cusp between the Toddler (15–36 months) and Pre-K (3–5 years) CLASS tools.

Here are some key factors to guide your choice:
Majority Age Group – If most children are under 36 months, the Toddler tool is likely the best fit. If most are over 36 months, the Pre-K tool may be more appropriate.
Classroom Structure & Interactions – If the classroom environment and teaching strategies are more aligned with toddler-level interactions (e.g., more teacher support, simpler language, less structured group learning), the Toddler CLASS tool is likely a better fit. If children are engaging in more complex discussions, problem-solving, and independent activities, then Pre-K CLASS might be more useful.

If the group is evenly split, some programs choose to assess with both tools at different times to capture a fuller picture. It may also be helpful to check with your program’s guidelines on CLASS implementation.

We would use the toddler one for the children that are up to 36 months old.
