What is self- and parallel talk? Why is it important? And how do I incorporate more of it into my classroom?

Muchas Gracias!  Thanks for such a good resource to practice on it, and actually to understand better what am doing with my Teachstone Studies. Wonderful !

Love the handout! Made sure each of my teachers received a copy. Hopefully this will help increase self-parallel talk in our classrooms.

Hi Patricia, we don't currently have this resource in Spanish. We're busy adding Spanish resources and translating current ones, so I'll make sure this is on the list.

Liz, Thank you for this handout - Increasing Self and Parallel-Talk. I use it often. Today a center director asked if it had been translated into Spanish. I told her I would check and I did not find it. Is it available and I missed it?

Many thanks or your comments on self and parallel talk. As an activity, I would ask teachers to envision preparing a packaged cake recipe with the children. Talk out the interactions. The conversational thread could include the following actions.

I am holding the box as I read the directions.
S1. You can help me. Now, you are emptying the cake mix into the glass bowl. I am stirring or mixing the eggs with the whisk. S2. You are pouring the milk into the bowl. You are stirring the ingredients. S1 and S2. Thank you for being so careful about keeping the mixture in the bowl.

I think we can figure out the rest. We are all thinking's these actions. We just have to combine thoughts and actions with language.

Thank you for sharing! This is a wonderful handout. I am going to print this out and put it up in my classroom, to help remind me to keep talking.
